Hahnenkamp's works deal with the precariousness and vulnerability of human existence. Her "portraits" deal with the complexity of an image and at the same time with the fragmentary, which always refers to something else that lies outside. She shows that it is only in the relationship to the other, in the relationship to the imaginary of the gaze and the symbolic of language, that identities emerge; and she shows that there is no ostensibly complete whole that could represent the persons depicted. Maria Hahnenkamp's art is grounded in making this experienceable with conceptual as well as aesthetic and technical perfection.
