Robert Werling's passion for black-and-white photography goes back a long way. His key experience was visiting an exhibition of Ansel Adams at the Yosemite Gallery in 1965, and from that point on he devoted himself to landscape photography, first as a student and later as a friend of Ansel Adams. Through this connection, Robert Werling became acquainted with many other "old" masters and mistresses of the American West Coast, including well-known names such as Brett Weston, Ruth Bernhard and Imogen Cunningham. Their visual language and choice of motifs are also reflected in Werling's works.
