The fruitful moment
In the middle of life, Damocles is dissatisfied with it. He envies his master Dionysius, who rules the city of Syracuse with a strong hand and enjoys his life with moderation. Damocles praises its treasures, its power and splendor. There has never been a more blissful man, he says. Then, Dionysius tells him, he should taste this life and test his luck. So the tyrant invites Damocles to a meal and offers him a golden camp at tables decorated with chiseled gold, where he is attentively served with choice food by beautiful boys. Blissfully, Damocles smiles and turns his gaze upward to the golden sword hanging from a horsehair, its shape reflecting the smile on his lips.
