In May 1968, the German photographer Stefan Moses documented the arrival of a sculpture from the Kraushaar Collection from New York in Munich. This collection was presented as part of the exhibition Sammlung 1968: Karl Ströher at the Neue Pinakothek in the Haus der Kunst in Munich from June 14 to August 9, 1968. The exhibition offered a comprehensive overview of contemporary art of the 1960s, contributed significantly to the dissemination and recognition of these art movements in Germany and had a lasting influence on the reception of Pop Art and Minimal Art in German-speaking countries.
Stefan Moses photographed both the construction and the opening of the exhibition in Munich, creating valuable documents of this important art event. Particularly noteworthy are the photographs of Joseph Beuys during the installation of his works. These images have a high documentary value, as they capture the process of creating and presenting Beuys' works.
The picture shows the staff of the Haus der Kunst placing a sculpture by the American artist George Segal in the garden. The female figure comes from the sculpture group Rock and Roll Combo from 1964. In typical Segal style, the sculpture group is made of plaster and shows a rock and roll band.
Segal's works are characterized by their true-to-life depictions, which often capture everyday scenes while conveying a certain timelessness. His use of plaster casts of real people lends the sculptures a special authenticity and presence.
