Picture of the Month
A wonderful artist, widely present, inter alia, in the SpallArt Collection, helps us to introduce a new format: the picture of the month.
From now on, we ask befriended artists, gallerists, photo friends and curators to write a text about a picture of the collection that particularly fascinates or captivates them, and to explain what makes that picture special.
I myself, as the collector, will start with a picture of the great Elfriede Mejchar. She celebrates her 95th birthday these days and I am very happy to own, exhibit and guard some of her wonderful works.
My picture of the month:
Elfriede Mejchar
untitled, from the series "Auto-Kraxis", 1988
This early, poetic and touching picture shows us several facets of the work of Elfriede Mejchar. Studies of deserted places and relics, vacated industrial buildings and storage areas kept her busy for a long time. She knew exactly – also in her extensive flower studies – how to visualise poetry in abandonment and transience as well as, like in this picture, to raise hope: new plants grow where something deteriorates.
A pioneer of the Austrian industry photography and a (sometimes winking) precisely observing, but above all Grand Dame of the photography who encounters things like the nature in a loving way, deserves all our respect. She influenced a lot of us and is highly appreciated in a stable circle of friends.
Thank you, Elfriede, for your wonderful photographs!
